| It's time again for the annual Cashtown Community Fire Department Fair, a 3-night event featuring homestyle dinners with our renowned fried oysters. Thursday, February 2, 2012 - Turkey & Oysters - Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 - Chicken & Waffles & Oysters - Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012 - Beef & Oysters - Doors open at 3:30 p.m. The meal each night includes the meat listed above, fried oysters, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, green beans, water, coffee, pepperslaw, applesauce and homemade dessert. The basement games will open at 6:00 p.m. each night. Please come out and support the annual Fair. We look forward to seeing you there! |
| Each winter the high cost of home heating fuels and utilities causes many Americans to search for alternate sources of home heating. The use of wood burning stoves is growing and space heaters are selling rapidly. Fireplaces are burning wood and man-made logs. All these methods of heating may be acceptable. They are however, a major contributing factor in home fires.
Many of these fires can be prevented. You can prevent the loss of life and property resulting from heating fires by being able to identify potential hazards and following a few safety tips:

| Company 4, Engine 5-1, Ambulance 6A, and Medic 28-2 were dispatched at 1646 hrs to the 400 block of Fairview Fruit Rd for a vehicle accident. Rescue 4 (Capt. Strasbaugh) was just clearing the scene of a first responder call in the Orrtanna area and responded immediately after dispatch with 4 personnel. Engine 4-1 (D/C Bowling) responded with 6 and arrived prior to the rescue squad to find that a single vehicle had struck a utility pole. The lone occupant escaped with minor injuries and was transported by Amb 6A. Crews handled a small fluid spill and returned to service at 1713 hrs.

| Five members from CCFD traveled to Abbottstown with Engine 4-1 to attend the funeral service for Fireman Brandon Little of United Hook & Ladder Company #33 who lost his life on the evening of January 18, 2012 when he was involved in a collision in his personal vehicle while responding to a working garage fire on Berlin Road.
We would like to give our sincere thanks to Guardian Hose Company of Thurmont, MD for tranferring Engine/Tanker 104 with a crew of four to protect the Cashtown area while our members paid their respects. The transfer crew did take in one medical assist call. Thanks again, guys! |  |

| After 24 days with no fire calls, the first call of the new year came in at 1158 hrs for a dumpster fire at 4743 Chambersburg Rd. Engine 4-1 (A/C Six) responded with 5. The engine arrived to find a smoldering fire inside the dumpster. After the fire was extinguished A/C Six decided to go dumpster diving. Not sure what was in there, but it must have been something good... E4-1 cleared at 1227 hrs.

| Tanker 4 was formally placed in service with a special announcement by the Adams County Department of Emergency Services at 1800 hrs this evening. A extraordinary amount of time and effort went into the tanker project and the department can be very proud to have a brand new, well designed piece of apparatus that will serve our community for many years to come. In conjunction with placing Tanker 4 in service, ACDES also officially placed Engine 4-3 permanently out of service. Engine 4-3 served the Department reliably for just under 28 years and was sold to a department member who will be maintaining the unit for parade use, etc.

| Company 4 was dispatched at 0749 hrs to 1229 Old Route 30 for an outside gas meter struck. E4-1 (Capt. Strasbaugh) responded with 4 followed by SQ4 driver only and arrived to find a gas meter that had been struck by the back end of a school bus when it pulled out of the driveway. The break was located between the meter and the structure and was able to be controlled by closing the valve on the meter. The gas company arrived shortly thereafter and all units cleared at 0816 hrs.

| Training was held Monday evening to allow members to drill on water supply operations with the new tanker including setting up the folding tank, drafting, transferring water between folding tanks with a jet siphon, dump valve operation and fill site operations. The training was well attended and we would like to thank Buchanan Valley for bringing Engine/Tanker 27 for use of the additional portatank.

| Company 4, Engine 5-1, Ambulance 2A and Medic 28 were dispatched at 2226 hrs to the area of Scooter's Mountain Side Tavern in the 4500 block of Chambersburg Rd for a vehicle accident. SQ4 (A/C Six) responded with 5 followed by E4-1 (Lt. Kane) w/3. D/C Bowling arrived to find 2 vehicles involved with one off the roadway into the woods. Two patients were treated and transported by EMS and the last unit cleared at 2343 hrs.

| Cumberland Twp Box Area 1-4 |
| Engine 1-2 and Truck 1 were dispatched at 1142 hrs to 50 Perrin Dr in Lincoln Estates for an automatic home fire alarm. At 1146 hrs, the assignment was upgraded to the box for smoke in the mobile home alerting Engine 4-1 as the second due engine. E4-1 (Chief Nagle) responded with 6 personnel. E1-2 (D/C Shank) arrived and established command and quickly reported burnt food as the cause, reducing the box to E1-2 and E4-1. Crews picked up and returned to service at 1216 hrs.

| After three full days of careful work, Danz Lettering finished up on the tanker this evening. He did an outstanding job and left us with a very attractive piece of apparatus. While in the house, Dan also replaced the lettering on the back doors of Squad 4 which were sanded down and repainted earlier this year due to corrosion around the door handle. It was relettered as "Rescue 4" in preparation for its impending redesignation next year. |

| Dan from Danz Lettering arrived first thing Monday morning to get started on the lettering and striping project. By the end of the week, the lettering and striping will be completed and the mobile radios will have been installed by Compros. |

| Company 4, Engine 5-1, Ambulances 2A and 6A and Medic 28-1 were dispatched at 1244 hrs to the intersection of Chambersburg Rd and High St for a vehicle accident with fire. E4-1 (D/C Bowling) responded with 4 personnel along with SQ4 (Capt. Strasbaugh) with 5. Units arrived to find that the fire had been extinguished by a passerby with a fire extinguisher and all occupants were out of the vehicles. The crew from SQ4 initiated patient care and E4-1's crew handled fluid spill control. The patients were turned over to EMS upon their arrival and units cleared after handling all hazards.

| Company 4 and Ambulance 2A were dispatched at 2135 hrs to the 900 block of Orchard Rd for the investigation of an unknown type of fire outside. E4-1 (Chief Nagle) responded with a crew of 6 followed by B4 (FF Pritt) with 2 and SQ4 (D/C Bowling) with 3. Units arrived to find an outside burn pile. The fire was extinguished and units cleared at 2209 hrs.

| Company 4, Rescue 1, Ambulance 1A and Medic 28-1 were dispatched at 2257 hrs to the 1700 block of Chambersburg Rd for a vehicle accident. Units arrived to find a single vehicle that had struck a utility pole. The patient was treated and transported by EMS and units returned.

| Members left the firehouse around 0700 hrs Friday morning to make the trip the 4 Guys plant in Meyersdale to perform the final inspection. After handling a few odds and ends, doing some test driving, receiving training on the pump and signing the final paperwork, the committee hit the road with the tanker arriving home around 1800 hrs. Danz Lettering will begin the lettering and striping process on Monday, November 28 and the installation of the Adams and Franklin County mobile radios is scheduled for the same week. Driver training will start immediately and it won't be long now until you hear the "Tanker 4" call sign on the radio. |

| New photos have arrived showing that the finishing touches are being done on the tanker. A/C Six and Capt Strasbaugh will be delivering all loose equipment to the plant on Thursday so that everything is mounted and ready to go when the committee arrives for the final inspection next Friday. |

| The box assignment was dropped at 0213 hrs for the mobile home fire in the 1900 block of Chambersburg Rd. E4-1 (D/C Bowling) was first to arrive finding a well involved mobile home at 1955B Chambersburg Rd. The box was held to the initial assignment and was under control at 0252 hrs. Overhaul operations were performed and the box was available at 0451 hrs.

| The tanker has continued to develop over the past week as can be seen in this week's photo update. The committee is scheduled to perform the final inspection at 4 Guys on Friday, November 18 and barring any unforeseen problems, Tanker 4 should be arriving home that evening. |

| With some unusually early winter weather bearing down on the area, it wasn't long before Adams County Control was busy dispatching calls all over the county. Company 4 got involved in the mix shortly after noon when Engine 4-1, Squad 4, Engine/Rescue 2 and Ambulance 2A were dispatched to the 1500 block of Knoxlyn-Orrtanna Rd in Highland Twp (Box Area 4-3) for a vehicle overturned. SQ4 (Chief Nagle) responded with a crew of 5 followed shortly by E4-1 (D/C Bowling) with 5. Crews arrived to find a pick-up truck on its side with all occupants out of the vehicle and no injuries.
While returning to quarters, SQ4 was alerted to the area of 1180 Buchanan Valley Rd (Box Area 27-1) for another vehicle accident. As SQ4 was passing Company 27's station, Chief 27 advised that the actual incident was on Church Rd and that SQ4 could return to service. Within a minute of returning to the station, Company 4 was dispatched to 1865 Carrolls Tract Rd in Hamiltonban Twp (Box Area 4-3) for utility wires down with a tree on fire. E4-1 (Chief Nagle) handled the call with 5 personnel while an additional crew of 6 remained in quarters. |

| Company 4, Engine 5-1, Ambulance 2A and Medic 28-1 were dispatched at 1828 hrs to the 4500 block of Chambersburg Rd in the area of Scooter's Tavern for a motorcycle accident. Deputy Chief 4 (Bowling) responded immediately after dispatch and arrived to find a motorcycle with two occupants that had been struck from behind by a passenger vehicle. Squad 4 (Chief Nagle) and Engine 4-1 (FF Clagett) responded with 5 personnel. Both units arrived along with E5-1 and initiated patient care and checked for hazards. Both occupants of the motorcycle were transported by EMS and PA State Police was on the scene to investigate. Units cleared at 1922 hrs.

| At 1601 hrs, Company 4, Engine 5-1 and Ambulance 2A were alerted for the vehicle accident at the intersection of Old Route 30 and Hilltown Rd. SQ4 (FF Mooney) responded with a crew of 4 followed by Engine 4-1 (Lt Kane) with 3. Units arrived to find a two vehicles in the intersection. One patient was transported by EMS and units returned to service at 1639 hrs.

| A group of members took advantage of a rain-free evening to spend some time on pump operations for drill night. Both engines traveled to the pond on Mount Carmel Rd in Orrtanna behind Knouse Foods where members practiced drafting and supplying. Current pump operators got a chance to refresh and future pump operators were able to get some hands on time and start learning some basics. The drill was well attended. Thank you to all who took time out of your evening to participate! |

| Company 4, Engine 5-1, Ambulance 6A and Medic 28-1 were dispatched at 2142 hrs to the 1600 block of Hilltown Rd for a vehicle accident. Deputy Chief 4 (Bowling) arrived to find a single vehicle into a tree with a single occupant confined in the vehicle. Squad 4 was on the scene of a medical call on the other side of the first due area which delayed its response so E4-1 (A/C Six) was first arriving. The crew performed a quick door pop with the combi tool from the engine and the patient was turned over to EMS for transport. Units cleared the scene at 2216 hrs.

| Company 4 and Ambulance 1A were dispatched at 1201 hrs to 812 Hilltown Rd for a dumpster fire. E4-3 (FF Brown) responded w/ 3 personnel followed shortly by SQ4 (FF Mooney) w/ 4. Units arrived to find a construction dumpster full of shingles on fire. An additional engine was requested bringing E5-1. Crews worked for over an hour to remove the shingles from the dumpster and fully extinguish the fire. E5-1 supplied E4-3 with two loads of water. Company 4 cleared the scene at 1335 hrs.

| Dual engines sitting side-by-side in the front row has been a rare sight at Cashtown since the arrival of Squad 4 in 1991. Those around at that time will remember that the last time this was the norm was when the 1963 Ford front-mount pumper was sitting where the 2001 Pierce is currently parked. If a picture from that era is located, we'll post it as a "now and then" just for fun.
Squad 4 will return later this week so it's only a short-lived return of the old days... |

| Company 4 was alerted at 1459 hrs to transfer to Franklin County Company 16 while both of their engines operated at the scene of a house fire in Mont Alto's first due area. E4-1 (Capt. Strasbaugh) handled the transfer with 5 personnel and was released at 1708 hrs with no calls handled.

| Members loaded up the apparatus early Saturday afternoon and made the short trip to Arendtsville for the annual Adams County Volunteer Emergency Services Association convention parade. Arendtsville hosted this year's convention is conjunction with their 100th anniversary. Convention activities included the business meeting and election of officers on Thursday evening, a pig roast at the South Mountain Fairgrounds on Friday evening, and a parade through the Borough of Arendtsville and post-parade festivities at the South Mountain Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon.
Although no awards were brought home to Cashtown this year, members had a great time participating. The CCFD would like to extend its congratulations to Arendtsville on their 100th anniversary and also congratulate our neighbors on the west side of the township (Buchanan Valley) on taking home the Moul Award. |
